Reboring

I have an auction I'm watching for an old SXS shotgun that has 2.5" chambers. Can it be rebored to 2 3/4"

Edit: It's not and won't be collectible.

Answer is maybe. Not only is the lip in the chamber moved forward, but the forcing cone also has to move forward. Some shotguns have a sufficent thickness of metal at the breech (remember- most barrels taper) Some will simply run out of metal- right at the point that gets the highest pressure when firing.

Just a "FYI" 11b6r, The highest preasure in a shotgun occurs at about one inch forward of the standing breach or bolt. From that point on, preasure declines. Refer to tests conducted by Sherman Bell and written about in the Double Gun Journal.

Might be easier/cheaper/safer to have Briley (or similar) put liners in to reduce gauge as well...

call whoever you are going to have rebore it. give him the specifics on the gun. he will want measurements of outside diameter at certain distances, then he will tell you if it is possible. kind of like having choke tubes put in.

If you do not wish to try the rebore, 2.5 inch shotgun shells are still available by Kent in their Gamebore line.
