have a 1 in. x 30 in. belt sander. what grit belts will i need & where to get them online?

  Are you shaping or sharpening? If the latter, I wouldn't us a belt sander. If shaping, google knife making supplies and you'll come up with a bunch of options. I used to get supplies from Jantsen (sp?)

  I use this guy to sharpen my knives. And he gets them scary sharp. He also makes and sells the wheels he uses to sharpen them. If you've ever been to a Tulsa gunshow such as Wannamacher. You've seen him. He's the the knife sharpening guy w/the revolving light on a pole above his booth. Note, while his wheels will get then VERY sharp, they also take alot of metal off. I've got a Buck 112 that I've had him sharpen 2 to 3 times a year for about 10 years. And the blade is about 1/2 gone now.

  I use my 1x42 belt sander with 320 grit to get the correct angle and finish with a 1x42 leather honing belt with the honing compound supplied by Lee Valley. They have every imaginable thing you will ever need for sharpening tools. Try them on Google-youll be pleased.

  For almost all uses I like my Lansky 5 stone kit. The coarser stones remove metal quickly to get to the angle you want then reduce to the finer grits to hone down to a razor edge. It's hard to put a small knife in the clamp and get a good angle on the stone, but that is the only real concern. I can't figure out a way to put my gerber Mk I is the clamps so I let Gerber do the work on that.

  For shaping Jantz is the place.
  
  For sharpening use a stone or better get a Lansky kit.
  Your belt sander will just take too much metal off the blade, even with the finest grit belt.

  I finally broke down and bought one of those 4 sided diamond hones.
  I thought I did well with a carbide stone, but you can get a knife scary sharp with a little care and patience and you won't use up half the blade doing it

  I like Gatco for my sharpening. They also stand behind their product. I had a stone fall out of one. I called to find out what I should use to glue it back in and they sent me the whole new tool.
