The Marlin XL-7 series has becom very popular here. I have not sold any of the Savage Axis rifles yet. My personal opinion from customers experience and reports would be the Marlin. YMMV

I would look at the TC Venture. After a lot of research I bought a TC Venture in 7mm mag and it shoots less than MOA at 100yds. They have a 308 win model and there is a fifty dollar rebate before 12/31/11.

Have one that I've NOT put through any paces or teating as yet. It looks good and the pricing was decent.

Will admit that I was prejudiced against the older Stevens and Savages. Over time I ended-up with several different makes, models ... I ended up being quite satisfied and happy with each one.

They were each utilitarian, looked decent and did what they were built to do. Maybe they put a bit more into a good job than into good advertising.

have heard a lot of decent reports and can not argue otherwise. [:)]

I have the savage axis and have put 200 rounds through it this summer. With 150 grain remington core lokts it will shoot a 3/4" group at 100 yards.

Of the 3 you listed the Savage. However, your pal is hurting himself/herself by limiting their choices. The Axis is not the 110/114 style rifle, which are noted for their ruggedness, and reliability. STAY AS FAR AWAY from the Remington 770 as you can.

I'm a big Savage fan but I too recommend the TC Venture. If you are near a Scheel's store they are on sale until the end of the month, with above mentioned rebate and their sale price, you can get the weather shield for $350 - which is an excellent buy ($500 gun value).

    Good luck!
