1911 options
ok i currently have a 70 series combat(blue) and prob getting a 70 series nickel. I dont want to hurt the value of these and want to keep them all 100% orignal. So my question is what brand would you buy to play with and to upgrade and make a highly custom 1911.

Impossible to answer the question without specifying exactly what you want to do with the gun and what you are looking to have done.
"Customization" could be anything from just new grips, to match-grade accurizing, to building a "race" gun, to a complete carry/combat overhaul with dehorning, tritium sights, and every other bell and whistle.
In theory any 1911 built to spec can have any aftermarket part dropped in, with appropriate fitting. So given enough money and effort you "could" build anything from anything (though whether or not you "should" is a different matter).
Also, given the sheer number and variety of 1911s out there, you can probably find something more-or-less exactly the way you want it out of the box.0 -
Hello I am both a shooter and collector of 1911 TYPE pistols.I shoot BULLS EYE MATCHES . Years ago I built many match pistols and then the series 70 Colt was as good as you could get. I also bought and shot many pistols that had been built by OLD SCHOOL master pistol smiths some of my pistols started life as PRE WAR National Match colts and Pre War 38 SUPERS [:(] Today we have both slide and frames available that are CNC machined as well as Match barrels and small parts . IMHO go to Brownells and buy Caspian slide and frame then buy a Kart or Barsto Barrel and trigger, hammer, sear, from The cylinder and slide shop.Save the Colts for the collectors down the road My pistols that started life as a 38 super and then converted to 38 special shoot great but value is 20 % of what they would be if not modified[:(!] Pictures on request just send personal email by double clicking on my user name. well kinda hard to say what i want. but for starters
i do want to speed her up a bit, deff will be doin some sort of front add on compensator, and i deff want tack driving accuracy, wont be a carry gun, more likely shooting match from time to time nothing competitve or serious, and range /plinker . i was told either a all SS used kimber or springfield will deff fit the bill.0 -

If you are sticking with a 45ACP. forget the comp. It is a waste of money on a 45 as they don't do much at all. Not enough pressure for one to work. I shot one for a year and didn't see what good it did.
Go with a loaded Springfield or the Trophy Match or a Kimber.
The new Springfield Range Officer Match looks good also.0 -
If you want a 1911-type that you can modify to your hearts' content without making yourself broke or destroying any collectors' dreams; try the ATI version made in Turkey.
For about $350, you get a 70-series "type" 1911 with 2 mags and a nice, lockable case.
Now you can go nuts.
I added a set of rubber wrap around grips with finger grooves and rosewood panels, rear night sights from IWI, filed my own dovetail up front and added a fiber front sight, stoned/polished everything inside, added hex grip bushings and allen grip screws, a flat mainspring housing, and a screw-on magwell flare.
Looks "original", shoots well, loads fast. Total was $550.0 -
another "basic" 1911 platform is the Para GI Expert. at around $500 it's a great value out of the box, but accepts all the available 1911 upgrades.
another option would be to build your own with Fusion parts. Huge assortment to choose from and bob serva (owner) is great to work with.
