.38 S&W
I recently bought a .38 Special. It is a 6 shot stainless or nickel plated revolver. Problem is it's a model 645. The Blue Book fails to list a 645 revolver. It is being cleaned by a local dealer and he seems to think it is a model 10- something. The 645 is clearly stamped in the crane. What do I have here? Thanks.

Give us a serial number and we can tell you for sure. Likely is a pre-model 10 (M&P) and the number you're looking at in the crane is an assembly number. Pictures will tell the story and just the serial number (on the butt) will probably be enough to identify it. 0 -

The S&W 645 was a double action stainless steel .45 semi-auto. The numbers you are looking at may be assembly/shop numbers stamped in the crane-way during factory building of the revolver. 0 -
A model 64-5 would be my guess. Its a stainless steel .38 Spl with either a 4" or 2" barrel, basically a model 10 in stainless. Why did you take it to a dealer to be cleaned? Thats something you should be able to do yourself. 0
