LeFever Nitro Special Chamber length

During that time frame paper shells with over shot wads and roll crimps were in use. I would get a modern FIRED plastic shotgun shell that was made with a folded crimp. See if it chambers, if it doesn't you got a short/obstructed chamber. Anytime you have any kind of obstruction in the chamber preventing a shotgun shell from opening unobstructed the pressure will raise significantly. Not likely it will cause a well made quality shotgun to self destruct, but you never can tell.

My Lefever 16 ga Nitro Special is 2 3/4", I haven't seen any issue with this gun with modern shells. However, you should check other guns to be sure for yourself. Try what R-S said and see if they fit as described.

Heat the chamber area with a blow dryer and insert a candle let it cool in place remove and measure cheap fast and easy. A lot of old 16ga had a 2 9/16 chamber. Remember the length is the length of the fired shell not the crimped length. Hope this helps
