Maynard 1882, 64 Cal Shotgun shell measurements
I have come into ownership of a 1882 Maynard 4 barrel set.
I can not seem to find any measurements for the 64 cal brass shotgun shell, 1882 thin rim. The only thing I know for sure is that the rim has a thickness of approximately .080 inch, as measured from breach face to rear of barrel.
All the info I have in my books and info found on the web so far has not provided any specs.
I know it's not the 20 gauge varient as a 20 gauge brass shell will not fit and the measurements of the chamber and bore do not match.
Was thinking of trying a 24 gauge brass shell, but would like info prior to trying to make that work.

Do a chamber cast using low melting point bismuth alloy, if nobody comes up with specific dimensions. Brownells carries it. It melts/liquifies around 200+ degrees. Would be very simple to use on a Maynard barrel that could be clamped in a vertical position. 0 -
The only thing I have is from A Guide to the Maynard Breech-Loader, by George Layman. He says the 64 shotgun cartridge falls between the 20 and 16 gauge in overall dimensions. He then gives the specs on the Model 1873 cartridge as CASE LENGTH 2.54"; NECK DIAMETER .679"; RIM DIAMETER .859"; BASE DIAMETER .686".

Wish Laymans and Cartridge of the world where true in this case, but like other info, is slightly off often times in reality. Maybe just production variances.
My barrel chamber base measurement is .688, case mouth area is .680 and bore is .639 inches and it actually has a choke measurement of .610, or about 29 points or about an Improved Modified. YEA !!
20 GA is .690 base and .675 mouth diameters. My new unfired Alcan 20 gauge brass shells are .688 and .675 and resized 20 gauge brass shells are .690 and .675 out of my PW 375. These Alcan cases have a mouth opening of .643 average.
I would have to say, without any other information to back it up, that the 64 cal shell was about the same as the 20 gauge, except for a larger bore diameter.0 -
Friend of mine, retired machinest, made a die for me. Sized the brass down .010 and now drops right into the chamber. Except it needed to be shortened, shortened .060 fits good, shortened another .010 for .070 to make sure no problems. 0
