Info on black jack
My father passed away last week. And in going through his effects I found an old Black-Jack. I remember him acquiring it when either my grandfather or great uncle passed many years ago. It's pretty old. Appears professionally made. Leather covered lead (I assume) and has a lanyard on the handle.
Are these legal? And are they worth anything? It's in really good condition.

State and city of residence laws would determine legality, we have no way of ascertaining what they are.
Be careful with it, some state and municipal laws regard black jacks in the same category as firearms. Years ago while I was still a unfortunate resident of cali I saw a couple of cops cite a guy at a flea market for selling a nightstick/baton. They would of probably hauled him off to jail for a black jack.
EDIT #1, Although Leo's can't carry saps any more, telescoping batons and Mag lights come in handy in times of need.0 -

Regarding the item in your post, I think you are referring to a "slap-jack". At least that's what I have heard them called. Regarding legalities, I think it depends on the state in which you reside.
I personally think they could eb considered a concealed weapon of sorts, but your local agency would be more apt to give proper advise.

Wouldn't a brick with a rope tied around it qualify as the same thing? I believe the use of an object should determine the legality not the possession of it. 0 -
Pretty commonly carried by LEOs until the 1960's, when it was determined that cops should NEVER hit a perp on the head. Quality slapjacks will have the manufacturers marks stamped on the leather.
They have become collectible, & value is in the $50-100 range. Keeping it in the home (as opposed to carrying it in your pocket) will be legal in most localities, but not all. Like all leather, they will eventually dry out & crack if not treated; if it were mine, I'd wipe it with Pecard's leather conditioner every few years.

Technically, a blackjack has a round weight, a sap is flat. In England, known as a Cosh. Posession or carrying is tightly regulated in most places in the US.
Back in the day, police uniforms had an extra pocket, narrow and deep, low on the right pants leg, forward of the right rear pocket. Known as a "sap pocket".0 -

Near that each and every State and more than likely the Territories too, have web sites with that same inofrmation listed.
And yes, what is legal in one State may well be illigal in it's bordering States.
PS: I'd be most likely to believe what is listed on the official State sites over what anyone told me about this subject on the streeeet or elsewhere. [:)]0
