M16 stripped lower

Will a m16 lower accept a .308 upper ?
I have worked for many years on older guns and never worked on an m16 platform . Not even when I was in the military .
Please advise .

  The answer is no. The 308, or AR-10, is based on a larger lower reciever, and the upper is larger to match. However, you can get 308/30-06 performance out of an AR-15/M-16 Lower. Olympic Arms was working on a round that takes the Winchester Super Short Magnum(WSSM) case and modifies it it to a 30 caliber.

  If you have a "true" M-16 lower, I would not advertise it unless you also have the ATF paperwork to support a full auto capable firearm. AR 15 is the common civilian product.

  Even if it did fit, how would you get a 7.62 magazine into a 5.56 magazine well?
