sell ammo & gun together? (? 4 ffls)

I heard a manager at a big box store say "The ATF prohibits the sale of a firearm and ammunition in the same transaction."

Seems to me I sure would have heard about this before now if it was so. Did I miss something or was that person blowing smoke?

  He may be thinking about travel by air the ammo and fire arm need to be in separate bags and when you ship you cant ship ammo by USPS and FEDX and UPS must have ammo shipped with the correct label. As to buying a fire arm and ammo I would say getting both at the same time is the norm. not against the law.

  Most employees of retail stores know next to NOTHING about the merchandise in the departments to which they are assigned. All they are taught is how to ring up the sale. That is nothing new. When I was a kid in college I worked at various times for three different department stores. I was put in a different department almost every day. It was strictly a manning issue, totally unrelated to any outside knowledge or skill.
  
  There is no federal law against buying guns and ammo at the same time. Local laws? Anything is possible.

  Come visit us in Illinois....Gotta show your FOID card to even touch guns or ammo. If you buy a gun, they walk you out the door and hand it to you in the parking lot. If you want ammo, you have to go back in and buy it seperately.
  
  
  I bought a rifle in Missouri a couple years ago. It was the first time in my 50 + years that I walked out of a store with a new rifle in one hand and a bag of ammo in the other....

  I purchased a rifle at a big box store in a caliber I didn't already own. I told the clerk I wanted to buy 2 boxes of ammo for it as well. I was told store policy was that the gun had to be purchased by itself and I had to be escorted out of the building. I could re-enter and purchase the ammo on a seperate transaction. I didn't like the idea of leaving the gun in the truck and going back inside so I waited and purchased the ammo at another time. I have heard similar stories from other people. I think it is store policy only and not law because I have purchased guns and ammo together from gun shops.

  Federal law would apply to the shipping, but not restricting the sale of both in the same transaction.
  
  Federal law regarding air transport.
  
  State law regarding thepersonal ground transport.
  
  If purchase from a large store it is no doubt the idea of selling weapon and ammunition for it and handing it over to an individual within the store.
