could a silencer work on a revolver??

    Are they as silent as in the movies or is that just for show? I have never fired one and was curious. In addition what is the general life span of a quality silencer? Im trying to figure out if its worth purchasing so I stop pissing off the neighbors.

    Not very well due to the gap between the cylinder and barrel. The correct name is suppressor.

    On the Nagant M1895 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagant_M1895 they work very well for many reasons the main being that the cylinder pushes up tight with the barrel not leaving a gap.

    As far as the name they go by many. ALL of mine are legally listed as silencers on the Form 4 that is required for ownership for private folks. It is a name, not an exact description of its actual function. Also in the NFA handbook put out by the ATF there are MANY reference to Silencers and none to suppressors, http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5320-8/atf-p-5320-8-chapter-2.pdf

    Yes, if you happen to have one of the sealed cylinder revolvers mentioned.

    The Nagant revolvers happen to be pretty inexpensive, too, though the ammo they fire is neither powerful nor inexpensive.

    As a side issue, I have no doubt that a suppressor/silencer will *somewhat* reduce the sound volume from a conventional revolver, but the effect probably isn't great enough to bother.

    Just getting a barrel threaded and attaching one does not do much good.
