I know this is a forum for guns. But I'm looking to buy a good pair
of Binoculars. I dont want to pay alot. I have a friend who bought some Brunton Lite Tec 10x42 from Cabelas for $99.00. I looked at Brunton's web site and read about them. Their MSRP is $239.00. Can anybody tell me what they think about them or how good they are? Mt friend bought them for his wife. He has compared them to his Lica's that he paid $800.00 for. The only different he says is in low light he can tell a difference. Any help would be great.

I have always been a Leupold fan so if it were up to me that would be my 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice[:D]. As for magnification I have found that 24X is usually tough to see thru since it magnifies the heat waves so much. Are you going to use it for varmints or off of the bench punching holes in paper? I would think that this would be a great scope to start off with especially for the price and that Leupold has a lifetime warranty on all of their scopes and it does not apply to the original owner.

As for the flip up scope covers they are made by Butler Creek and they have many different sizes available for both the occular and objective lenses.

    Good luck.

    dsoelter,

I have used many brands and types of rifle scopes. The US made or Brand, for a better term these days, scopes from best to worse value, are Burris, Leupold, and Weaver. However, there is a new outstand that is in your range, and I put one on my GA Precision GAP-10, and that Is the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50. They are available in the first focal plane retical for around a grand, and the second focal plane reticle for around 800.00. They are very comparable to the NightForce NXS 5.5-22x56, which I also have one of. The NF cost around $1900.00. Actually the Viper has some things that I like better than the NightForce.

    EDIT 1

For what its worth, and I don't mean to sound like I am cutting down ones choices or prefferences in optics....

Leupold, once upon a time used to be the American ICON in rifle scopes. For years they had the largest following, and best technology, and were the riflemans dream of scope.

Then for 15-20 years, they sat on their market share, and over price/under delivered scopes. Solely taking advantage of their brand name. During that course of time, other's have cropped up, of which Burris is their main domestic, heads up competitor, but there is Sightron, Nikon, the New Weaver, and now Vortex. Leupold, IMHO, while striving to make technological advancements now, will never catch back up to the lead it once had. Especially in the eyes of the unbiased, descriminating rifleman.
