1911 versions???
ok i looked around and did not find what exactly i was wanting answered so here we are.
1. What is the differance in the differnt colt 1911(series)
2. there were several diff manufactures during WWII who makes the best. I know colt made OG and still do make OG version but is theres the best?
3. who makes best knock off?
and I know with out pics hard to say, but i bought a colt combat 70 series in VERY good shape 85-90% condition with some tastefull upgrades IE: exstended beaver tail, new trigger, full lenght guide rod, front bushing(or what ever it is called on end of slide and frame), 3 wilson combat mags and 9 box's of range ammo, and a galco tan leather belt holser for 975$. Good deal??

Man, there are whole books on the subject.

A friend who had at least one of everything except the ultra rare Singer Sewing Machine said he thought the Remington Rand was the best. A collector told me they were all bought under the same specification and therefore must be the same throughout, but he doesn't shoot his old guns.
Current knockoffs, do you want to spend $500 or $5000?
Hard to go wrong with a real Colt if your budget is in the middle.

The government mandated complete parts interchangeability no matter who the contractor was, and allowed no maker-to-maker variations in materials, or heat-treats (all of the parts drawings included those).
There was some accuracy testing done at Aberdeen proving Grounds, on diverse guns and diverse gun/barrel/parts combinations from the different contractors. They all shot into the same envelope, as could be expected. One interesting result was that all of the barrels, when removed from the guns and fired alone from a fixture, did not fire appreciably larger groups than match barrels did.
The identity of best knock-off maker is an open question. Recently, one of the budget guns (Rock Island, Philippines), in 9mm, was fired 40 consecutive times with rounds that were over proof-pressure, and the gun worked normally in spite of the primers being blown. The 41st round blew the case head completely and blew the grips off the gun, but when the destroyed case was cleared from the chamber, the gun continued to work without malfunctioning, and there was no other damage.0 -

Books can be written on this, and have been.
In a nutshell, the series 70 guns lack a firing pin safety meaning that in theory if the gun were dropped hard on its muzzle, it could go off. The series 80 type guns have a firing pin safety, making the guns more drop resistant, but the trigger-activated safety partly degrades the trigger pull. So target shooters like the series 70 type guns, defensive shooters MAY prefer the series 80 guns.
"Best" non-Colt 1911 is subjective, and IMO largely speculative. "Best" in what way? Accuracy? Reliability? Bang-for-buck? For one person a $3000 match gun might be the "best", and for another a $450 "shooter" might be the best.
There are so many different 1911 makers now, all jockeying for a piece of the large market, that the market is pretty true: IE, you mostly get what you pay for, with more money getting you more features: Better sights, checkering, forged frames, etc, etc.
Note that "more" does not equal "better".0 -
