22 W R F
I was given a box of gun stuff and included is an almost full box of 22 W R F Super X ammo. I'm pretty sure that it's an old box.
It looks like this ammo was Winchester's predecessor to the 22 Magnum.
Can anybody tell me more information about this ammo? Can it be fired from a 22 magnum?

The short answer to firing it from a 22 mag. is "yes".
The 22WRF is often referred to as the 22 Special. Never
was anywhere near as popular as the 22LR. You might
sell it to a collector and get TWO boxes of 22Mag.0 -

That wouldn't help. I don't have a 22 mag. I asked the question because wikipedia said it could be fired from a 22 mag. I don't trust wikipedia all that much.0 -
In this case, you can trust Wikipedia. The 22 WRF is the predecessor to the 22 WMR. It has an OAL that is .10 shorter, and it creates a lot less pressure. 0 -
Is there much interest in it as a collector's item? Enough to warrant listing it on the auction side? 0 -

A word of warning. Some of the early .22 WRF ammo had corossive priming. You can shoot it with no problem but you had best clean it immediately after shooting with hot soap and water or some other cleaner suitable for corossive primers. I trashed a mint barrel on a Stevens bolt action in .22 WRF because I was not aware of this. Barrel was severely pitted after sitting for a week or two without being cleaned. 0 -
Just a story....Of my Dad's friend "old Mike"...who was a homestedder in the U.P. of Michigan near Munising. Mike built a cabin and lived with his dogs...each summer when I was a kid in the 40's & 50's we would visit Old Mike...my dad would give him a box of shells each year for his Winchester pump 22 WRF. Mike shot lot's of deer with that rifle...his main source of meat! I have often wondered what ever happened to his old Winchester?? 0 -
True story from 1970 : I grew up on a farm in N. IL and my mom told me that an old lady in her 80's had a gun she wanted "cleaned" ! I went to her house (one mile away) and she went to the closet and brought out an 1890 octagonal winchester pump in 95% condition. She said that her husband had shot a snake back in the 1930's and had never fired it again and that the action wouldn't open. I took it home and with penetrating oil got it open with 20 minutes elapsed. Out popped a corroded copper cased WRF fired cartridge. There were seven more in the magazine. The chamber was corroded to a depth of 1/4 inch and the bore rated 1 1/2 on 10 scale although,as I say the outside was 95% I buffed the bore, and kept the cartridges,replacing them with modern counterparts. She gave me $20 which was rightous bucks in 1970. I told her I'd love to have the gun and pay her going price (probably $75) but she said she was giving it to her nephew - and as it was, she died 3months later while I was in college and missed the sale where it went for $125 but I'll bet they didn't look at the bore or chamber! 0 -
Keep the old 22 wrf ammo as is in the box for your collection or collector.
Yes 22 wrf can be fired in 22mag and is produced currently.
Best purchased as cci 22 wrf hollow point. Makes an excellent low noise hard hitting squirrel round, to supplement your normal louder 22mag ammo.0 -

And there is a 45grn flat point load from Winchester that is supposed to have some pretty good terminal ballistics out of the short barrel derringers/NAA mini guns0
