handi rifle - polish chamber - shocked what i foun

hello;

had my 308win. h&r handi rifle for several years. always had the problem of @1/3 of fired case will not eject. just lived with the issue, but now someone else wnats to hunt with this rifle and now it's an issue.

followed advice from another web site on "how to polish" my handi's chamber. shocked what found.

used a spent case, fired in my rifle, coated with j. b. bore paste, and spun with a drill.

looked into chamber and discovered 14 "flutes", evenly spaced, running from back to front of chamber. 7 bright and 7 dull "flutes".

anyone got an idea on what i'm seeing? how does h&r cut handi rifles chambers? dull reamer chatter???? factory defect???

    longitudinal flutes are usually designed to assist extraction as in the CETME/HK military rifles. Do your fired cases have evidence of the flutes on them?

    thanks for reply. @1/3 of cases will not eject. common problem with handi rifles. cases do not have the marking as you would have with the hk91.

    if the reamer was dull, would it have some type of "chatter"???? the flutes are not pronounced. just areas that are dull and areas polished.

    Hand finished with straight fluted reamer.

    I've had a couple of H&R rifles in 223 that had extraction problems. One 243 never failed so I can't say it's universal.

    The design is weak. They can worked over to improve extraction preformance. Best to use nickle plated brass as its a little slicker. A short piece of brass cleaning rod needs to be with these rifles. Other than that they shoot well. I have seen chambers with groves from a reamer carrying a chip; never saw flukes as you described.

    Sounds like poor finishing and quality control. Did your polish job on the rough chamber make extraction easier, or is it still the same?

    cases are not marked when fired in rifle. ejection.... a crap shoot, maybe 1/3 fail to eject.

    was not a problem before. but someone now wants to use the rifle and now case ejection is a problem.

    rifle is about 8 years old. used the rifle to shoot cast bullets. just a play toy plain and simple. kinda like the looks of rifle with its brown laminated stock.

    Trying to fix this on the forums is nearly useless. You can go 'round and 'round with things like this until you take it to a gunsmith and have it fixed. If it's just a 'play toy', leave it at home and tell the other person to pick a reliable rifle to shoot, then it's no longer an issue.

    The 'flutes' in the chamber are burnish marks from the reamer, not actual cuts. The light reflects off of the burnish making them visible but you won't feel them. They will polish out.

    You've got to measure a case or chamber cast to see how much variance
    you have and whether it's small enough to polish out.
