    Friend of mine picked up a Winchester 97 ser. no. 236767c and wanted to know when it manufactured and what the c stood for.

    He also picked up a National Firearms pump shotgun ser. no. 124523 for this one he wanted to know the year of manufacture and perhaps who made it (if it was a rebrand).

    So I told him I would ask ya'll. Any help is appreciated.

    The Blue Book lists your Winchester as being made in 1903.

    National Firearms was a Trade Name used by Marlin on some of their pumps.

    Thanks for the info. One more question is there a database that I can use to look up the ser. no. for a d.o.m. for this shotgun?

    Winchester Model 1897 serial number 236767 was manufactured in February of 1904.

    The "C" denotes the mechanical configuration of the receiver/action. As time went by, Winchester continued to make improvements (modifications) to the action and receiver group. With each change, they changed the letter stamped above the serial number on receiver part of the gun. When the Model 1897 was introduced in June of 1897, it did not have a letter. When the first mechanical change was made in March of 1898, the letter "C" was used. The reason the letter "C" was used was becuase the letters "A" ans "B" had previously been used on the Model 1893. The Model 1897 was a continuation model of the Model 1893.

    That is a Bad source of information concerning Winchester serial numbers[xx(]
