j c higgins model 20
i guess i posted my question in wrong forem so ill do it again, sorry about that. i recently inherited a 12 ga. model 20 j c higgins few specs of rust on the reciever, scrapes in the finish of the stock. the poly has 3 chock screw in:s very tight unit. sr. 58x.54 says made for sears robck co. in reciever and poly. 2 3/4 chamber. this is a heavy gun, im 73 still hunt im wondering who made it and how old and value. any consul would be very much appreciated. charlie

I am looking for some information on a j c higgins model 20. I have an idea that the two guns in question were built in the early 50's. I have two of them and want to change the barrell from one to the other. Does anyone know how the barrell is removed? 0 -
Your Model 20 was the second and deluxe variation of the High Standard manufactured Sears J. C. Higgins Model 20. This shotguns was designed developed tooled and produced exclusively for Sears at Sears expense. Originally your shotgun has a High Standard/Sears Pachmayr POWer-PAC choke system.
583.54 is not the serial number but rather a Sears reference number where the 583 is the vendor code for High Standard and the 54 is the specific model and its variation. None of the Model 20's were serial numbered. Internally this was the High Standard HS2 family of guns. Your gun was most likely manufactured in 1948 ans was superseded by the HS3 in 1949.
There is virtually no collector value for these guns and value is primarily determined by its condition.0 -
Your JC Higgins Model 20 is actually a High Standard product. It is probably 50-60 years old and is worth about $150-$250 depending upon condition. It is a very good quality shotgun with a smooth pump action and a unique and interesting choke device. It was featured in a "Gun Digest" article many years ago and received a very favorable write-up. 0 -

Charlie- while these are great shooters, the High Stand Flite King Field Deluxe does not have a collectors value. Has yours got the little metal shield inset into the toe of the stock? I picked up 2 of the JC Mdl 20s, and one Mdl 21 (20 g pump). Most I paid for any of the 3 was about $85. But they make great bird guns- keep them as a loaner for friends, grandkids. 0 -
They are a pretty durable Hi-Standard product, but are not as strong on resale value as their quality would warrant. I have two nephews who use theirs regularly, and I was lucky enough to pick one up myself from an estate sale for $150, apparently unfired. I happen to like steel receivers. As a land-bird gun, rabbit gun, or a buckshot thrower, your M20 will do fine. 0
