winchester rotary dovetails (barrel)
what kind of tooling do I need to cut the dovetails in the bottom of the barrels of 1890 1906 61 62 models and where can I get it. thanx

I don't know Winchester rifles very well but Colt lighting rifles have a dovetail that is not cut straight across but in an arc I have used a dovetail end mill with barrel in a rotary table. You will have to find out how far from the center of the table to get the area of the barrel you want to cut to obtain the right radius. Buy some round Rod to practice on before attempting this type of machining on your barrel . 0 -
I agree with PS if you never have machined dovetails in the past, practice on a piece of round stock before working on the Winchester barrels.
Usually two mill cutters are used. The first would be a basic end mill, then a special dove tail mill cutter to cut the actual dovetail. You have to be very careful to get the correct size dove tail cutter. As the male dovetail that fits into the female cut made by the dove tail cutter has to be a interference fit, i.e. tight enough that you have to use a punch to make it fit in the female dovetail.0 -
People that use a punch on rotary dovetails is exactly why they need to be recut. You dont drive rotary dovetails with a punch. they twist in the rotary dovetails. if you ever work on old winchesters I hope you remember this. 0 -

Live and learn, new one to me. All dovetails I ever worked on were interference fit. If either the male or female dovetails were out of spec, major problems resulted.0 -
I have used the 3/8" dovetail cutter to make these cuts. Level with the barrel taper not the bore. Use end mill for the initial cut, than the dovetail. Codv45 has it, you rotate the magazine ring out. NOT PUNCH 0 -
Remington pump guns also use rotary dovetails to attach mag tube rings.
A good idea for what the rings have to do but a bad idea if you don't expect it and need to take the gun apart.

The Wlinchester dovetail cuts are not the same width straight across, they are wider in the middle then on the outside. You put the piece in at an angle and then turn it into position, I know I am one of those guys who thought they were straight and drove it out then wondered why it didn't fit right during reassembly. Guns have lots of odd stuff that you wouldn't normally know and many times is not listed in books. Like the nut that holds the rotary magazine in Savage 99's is a left hand thread. 0
