I'm in NW Ark. Pretty much just whitetail here on the farm and I'm set up well for them. Last week this little fella showed up and then I later found Mom and sibling, Young ones are 2 year olds so the Sow is a legit target. Question is what rifle and load do those of you that have deer as a primary and black bear as an option? on the small end and my preference for whitetail is a 243 but options are 30-06 7mag 300RUM 45-70 450 marlin 405 win. 375 H&H Take into consideration that I reload everything and I have other options. Just like something that wont blow up a deer but will be adequate for a 500lb black bear just in case.

45-70 or 375 H&H 0 -
I think the 243 is a little lite for bears. My vote is for the 405, wish I had dad's 95. 0 -
marlin .444. I hunt deer with it.... it's killed a bear..... 0 -
Your 45-70 or 450 marlin will do the job fine. 0 -
Thanks guys, I'm leaning toward the 405 or the 450 which I have some great cast loads for. 0 -
I use a bean flip and a pocket knife.
Use M&M's in the bean flip to lure them in close for the final assult.
A lock back knife is more user friendly if you have to do any wrestling with mommy bear.[;)][B)]0 -
30-06 will do just fine for black bear. Use a 180gr nosler partition. Boost it up to about 2800 ftps. 0 -
7mm rem mag was in the choices?
162gr Hornady SST will turn them inside out!0 -
Critters must be tougher now.
Once upon a time "deerandblackbear" rifle was pretty much a single standard and started at .30-30.0 -
30-06 loaded to 2900-3000fps with 150gr SST should drop deer or black bear in their tracks.
Shot a buck a few years ago with that load from 70yds he was facing me shot him in the chest and the bullet penetrated to the hips and liquefied the chest cavity0
