Barrel length measurement on Remington

12A or 12C.
The A is 22" barrel; the C is 24".
The rifle I have measures 23" to the receiver and has 5/8" inside the receiver.
No book lists a 23 5/8" barrel.
What do you think I have?[:)]

  ATF measures with a dowel rod. Send a dowel rod down the barrel till it bottoms against the closed boltface, mark the dowel, pull it out, and measure.
  
  There can be no other actual barrel length of your firearm. You can work from there.

  This is simply NOT true.
  
  The ATF has never been in charge of or the overriding authority for the Bureau of Standards or Bureau of Weights and Measures. Nor have they ever been used as the supreme authority when it comes to the accurate measurement of rifle barrels.
  
  The wooden dowel is a field expedient method of measurement created to be fool-proof for even the most novice or inept agent to use successfully. It was never intended to be held up as the golden ruler of gun barrel lengths.
  
  All I can suggest for your question is what I've seen previously. The barrel may have been cut or the barrel actually measure a tad shorter in some cases but the factory advertised length is still used in the description. This is not uncommon even in today's modern manufacturing markets, measurements are given as approximates but close enough for the average consumer. You may need to contact the Remington Society to get a historical reference.
  
  The ATF, FBI, HRT, Army and Marine Corp all have specifications for their rifle barrel lengths which do not involve the use of a wood dowel at all. These are spelled out in specifications documents which all bidders have to adhere to. They generally pertain to a length specified from a physical characteristic of the rifle such as the recoil lug. An example is the Army's M-24 sniper system which has a callout of 24 inches from the front of the recoil lug. This winds up being 25" since you have to include the thread tenon and the recoil lug into the overall measurement.

  Thanks again for the reply. I used 23 5/8" in the description 'cuz that's what I saw. Not trying to screw anybody but to be accurate.

  When you wish to cut a barrel to the minimum [as allowed by law], just what measuring technique should be used?
  
  We all have to be on the same page, in this regard. It's too serious an issue to refer to measurement 'X', when those that will cite you in violation may be using measurement 'Y'.
