Winchester 1885 and factory tang sights - Bert ?
Good afternoon All ... Periodically I see original Winchester vernier tang sights Model(s) 38A and 38B and they are marked "73" or "76" on the bottom. In the Winchester "Sight Book" it shows that both were used on multiple models but it why were some marked "73" or "76" and others blank or only patent dates? Is the angle of the upper tang different for different models? Are the sight springs underneath adjustable? So many questions ... thank you in advance ... Joe

The sight you are referring to is the Mid-range vernier tang sight. They were very rarely ever factory installed on the lever-action Models 1873 and 1876, but they were relatively common on the Model 1885 Single Shot rifles.
This is from memory, as I do not have one of each sight type available to compare; the early variations were made with a much thicker sight base, and I believe (but do not know for sure), that the elevation staff was slightly taller on the sights intended for the Model 1876. When the Model 1885 came along, the early Mid-range tang sights installed on them were marked "76". Within just a few years, the sights bases blank. I have not ever encountered a Mid-range vernier sight with a patent date on it.
The base springs are not adjustable.0
