Valmet O/U shotgun, question.

Can anyone tell me if the barrels on the Valmet/Savage 330 shotguns are silver soldered or soft soldered? I need to reblue the barrels and don't know whether or not I should use hot, caustic blue. Any info would be appreciated. e-mail me leesshop@starband.net

  Well, it does not really matter., as more than likely your bluing solution will be well under 212 degrees F. Most soft solder is pure lead with 2-5% tin, and melts above 275degrees F. I will gaurantee that those barrels were blued after they were soldered together at the factory.

  "Well, it does not really matter., as more than likely your bluing solution will be well under 212 degrees F.".......NOT SO, NORMAL 'HOT' CAUSTIC BLUEING RUNS AT 285/310 DEG.F. AND IT TENDS TO DESOLVE TIN/LEAD SOLDER. MOST DOUBLES ARE 'RUST BLUED', SEVERAL APPLICATIONS OF A 'RUSTING' AGENT, CARDING OFF LOOSE RUST, BOILING IN WATER AND THEN REAPPLYING THE AGENT (SEVERAL TIMES).

  Thanks guys for your response's. I will try to call Savage (good idea).
  My bluing solution runs at between 285 and 295 degrees so it will and has in the past disolved soft solder and split double barrels apart! These were older (prewar 2) mfg. so the newer ones may all be silver soldered. But, I don't want to find out by seperating these barrels, the reason for my question. Again, thanks.
