You make the choice - 7mm WSM or a 280 AI?

Going to build one of them, just want your thoughts on these 2 calibers.

    One of my legs IS shorter than the other, but the other one isn't. In fact it's longer. Where does that leave me???

    Are your building or buying? What action? Do you already have a 7mm? Is one of your legs shorter than the other?
    I would go with the AI.

    Since I own and reload for both, and have shot the WSM to 2k yds. and the 7mm-08 to one mile SUCCESSFULLY (and the .280 AI to 1k successfully), I would give the nod to the 7mm WSM.

    Either will serve you well. Build it right from the ground up. Get a good barrel, get an aluminum bedding block in the stock, whether you go with a composite or a wood stock. Look at and try what triggers you can. Look at scopes. Get a tight enough twist to handle the 200's in 7mm, 1-8" if you want all you can get out of a target rifle. Talk to the smith who you plan to use and what bullet you plan to shoot and for what reason. Any of the three I have mentioned have enough power to take anything in North America on the hunting side. It may depend on how long a shot you want to make and how much you want to cut down on windage and elevation. Hunting or target/tactical.

    I have some pretty strong and well founded opinions on the 7mm. E-mail me if you have questions. I would suggest you e-mail nononsense also as he works on the building side of them and get his opinion. I value it very much. It will save you a lot of heartache and dollars for something you may or may not want.

    7mm WSM, if you are building the rifle, consider the 7mm SAUM. Uses a little less powder but gives up very little. I think Nolser came out with brass. Nice 1k round. Can't go wrong with a 7mm WSM or SAUM.

    They are all 7s in my book.

    I have used the 7mm Rem Mag and reloaded for it the most.

    I've used the 7mm Mauser and the .280AI some with no complaints. I also even have a soft spot in my heart for many of the AIs.

    Purchased a Win 70 in the 7mm WSM but have not as yet put it through it's paces. I have read and compared notes with people that have used them and the Rem SAUM for a good while.

    I believe that the numbers of, and the use of the "short mags" will continue to grow and will prove to be as many have reported having and providing accuracy.

    Of course the action and the barrel that you select will the most telling factor into creation of the rifle that you lelect.
