M1 Garand Question

I know that there are narrow base and wide base gas
cylinders for M1 Garands.. I have been told that a
M1 Garand (manufactured around 1944) should have a wide base
cylinder... My question is, will a narrow base fit the
rifle? there seems to be more narrow base cylinders up for
auction then wide base...

  I just picked up an M1 Garand in great condition, the receiver is marked on the left side C A T Gorgia, VT. The stock is after market, as it has no inspector stamps or other markings on it.
  Can anyone give me an idea what this is? Who C A T is? Is value comarible to armoury rebuild?

  Are you sure it's not CAI? CAI is Century Arms International. They essentially built Garands on their own receivers using whatever parts they could find. Their receivers aren't always withing spec measurement wise and you're taking a risk by firing it. I'm not just regurgitating internet hearsay, I have a CAI Garand that I haven't shot in years since it started throwing it's bolt with every shot.

  I've inspected 2 CAI's at the range (after the shooters had malfunctions), & found that catpealer's experience is typical. Parts are used USGI, sometimes good, sometimes not so good; however, the receivers are too far out of MILSPEC for either safely or reliable function.
  
  These rifles usually sell in the $400 range, but sell only to newbies who don't know what they are.

  Because the receivers are of much lower quality than original USGI receivers the rifle's value is limited to the value of it's parts.

  "the receiver is marked on the left side"..............JUST TO NOTE: this COULD be a usgi m-1 that was re-imported by CAI........pix?

  If it is a USGI receiver, it will be marked on the heel (behind the rear sight) with a the nomenclature U.S. RIFLE / CAL. 30 M1 / (manufacturer) / (serial number) where the manufacturer could be Springfield Armory, Winchester, H&R Arms Co. or International Harvester. These are the only USGI manufacturers.
  
  The CAI receivers are notorious for being an investment cast receiver of poor quality. Real USGI receivers were forged.

  The first place I looked was behind the rear sight on the back of the receiver, nothing there. I looked closer at the markings on the left side of the receiver, it does say C A I. I'll take the rifle totaly apart today and figure out what kind of barrel and gas system it has. Your probably right, it will sell as a parts gun.
