    Hello Ray,

My personal level of knowledge concerning the Model 37 is relatively limited as compared to the lever-action and single shot models. That said, the description of the gun in question is quite suspicious.

The original Winchester Model 37's made from about 1936 to 1963 and made in New Haven,CT were not serial numbered. The Winchester Model 37A's were made by Winchester at the old Cooey Machine & Arms Company plant located in Coberg,Ontario, Canada which Winchester purchased . Thee guns will have a serial number preceded by a "C".

I have a standard Winchester 67 on the auction side, there is no serial number on the rifle. The hammer is standard, the same as on all the 67s I've ever seen.
