FAL safety problems

While fiddling with my FAL (an Entreprise arms metric 03 style receiver, 16" barrel) tonight, I inadvertently took the safety lever out. I reinstalled it, and discovered that it is now almost impossible to move from safe to fire or vice versa. It was always a little stiff, but now it takes a superhuman amount of effort ever since I removed it. Strangely, when the rifle is open, it works just fine. When it's closed, I practically have to hammer it from one position to the other.

Before you ask, 1.)yes, I'm sure I put it in right; there's only one way to put it in.

2.) I'm not a little girl; I'm more than strong enough to manipulate it under normal circumstances.

Also, for some reason, the release lever also takes more "oomph" to open now than it did before. The lower the release lever is, the tighter the safety.

What's the deal? How can I fix it?

  Been buildin' em since 96. Not sure what the problem could be.
  
  Take it all apart and do it over again. Something isn't assembled correctly.

  took it apart and reassembled it about 140 times. The lever only fits one way.
  
  FWIW I kind of got it fixed. I slathered it with lithium grease and instead of slamming the pieces together, I pressed in the disassembly lever, gently put it back together and let the lever put itself back into place without my assistance.
  
  It's still tight (always was) but I can at least move it now with my fingers instead of having to pound it with a 2X4.
