Sig Sauer P290 Range Report
I bought the P290 for my wife to carry, just got it and took we took it to the range yesterday. We put about 100 rounds through it (I think I got about 18 shots).
It had a well balanced feel. The night sights were pretty easy to line up on target and get back on target for the follow-on shots.
The recoil was quite manageable for a small frame carry gun. That was when I came to appreciate the rather rough factory grips - they didn't slip at all.
It will fire without the clip in place. I think the clip release button was a little light for my preference. She had a fair amount of trouble loading the 6th out of 6 rounds into the clip, (me too) but I'll write it off to the newness of the clip spring.
We ran 2 brands of factory rounds through it, Fiocchi and Winchester. There were no jams and they both fed and ejected well. There were a few (4 or 5) instances of the rounds not firing on the first attempt. They all occurred after the gun was warm with one of the ammo brands although on the first one I ejected the round and it looked like the firing pin didn't make a good impact on the primer - more of a scratch to one side of the primer. On the subsequent non-fires, my wife discovered that you could simply pull the DAO trigger again and it fired on the second attempt on the same shell. This is a little concerning for a carry gun - when you want to use it, it's like a dangerous game gun - you want it to work flawlessly. I'll give it a good cleaning and try again in a week or so.
She preferred it to the LCP, for feel, recoil and the sights. She would prefer a chambered round indicator, as you can't see the case as in the LCP and the slide is still a bit tough at present for her to get all the way back consistently.
All in all a nice gun, if we can get past the 4 or 5% second trigger pull to get the round touched off. Any other thoughts besides a good cleaning and retry?

As with any new gun, a little break-in is needed. I like to put at least 200 rounds thru a pistol before putting it "to work". Give it another 100 or so (maybe tell the wife you're helping her out by doing it for her, at least get you a little trigger time on it) then clean it well and lube it lightly. 0 -
The magazine only holds 6 rounds? I have been going back and forth between the Kimber Solo, Sig P290, Kahr, MK9 Ruger LCP9, and Kel Tec PF9. Price and weight maight knock the Sig and Kahr out of contention 0 -

You can get an extended mag for the SIG that will hold 8 rounds and elongate the grip. That's a pretty decent payload for a small 9mm.
My question is how does this gun stack up to the Kel-Tec PF-9 at less than half the cost. I've shot that one, and for what it is, its pretty good.0 -
Quick update for now.
I called Sig's Customer Service today. I was surprisingly impressed. They took it very seriously and after some info exchange they are sending me a label to use to ship it back and will check it out, rework what's needed and ship it back within a couple weeks.
So...more in a few weeks.0
