Winchester letter?
so i have read a few threads that talk about having a letter from winchester. What is it exactly and does it pertain to certain guns? how does one go about obtaining one?

^ ok now what if my gun was sold as a winchester but made by another company? And i did not see anything about them doing shotguns 0 -

The Winchester letter, untill about 1980, was actually from Winchester, if I am not mistaken. It was basically a letter of authenticity, stating on what configuration a specific serial numbered firearm left the factory.
They now come from the BBHC in Cody, as that is whre all the Winchester historical records went to. Our fine Moderator, Bert H., puts in many hours of research there every year, and is a Winchester collector and scholar.
I am sure he will be along shortly, and give you a definatively stronger answer.

The only way to find out is to post the information for him to evaluate, such as what gun, SerNo, etc.

PLZ dont tell me the same info i have already found on goolge. The Winchester 91 was made in the 1970's in Spain by Laurona for international sales but were never sold in the US. Available in 12 ga only.0 -

I will give you some info google wont. Its not a Winchester. Its a Laurona. Another spanish import with cheap wood, fake engraving probably F/M chokes. Chrome lined barrels will hold up well. Its good for a truck gun but by no means a quality O/U.0 -

kinda funny it says winchester model 91 on it. So wether it was made by them or not it was sold UNDER THEIR NAME, so sorry sir it is a winchester. hate to also inform ya the engravings are better than ALOT of other "nice" shotguns have. And question for you. What makes it not a quality o/U? Now am i saying it is best O/U ever NO. IT is and always has been sold/ called a FIELD gun.0 -

Its a inexpensive spanish made o/u with prob. 2 tirggers no ejectors, a chrome lined FM 28" barrels, bad engraving on a nickel or chrome plated reciever. Maybe a walnut stock with OK checkering. The fact that Winchester put its name on it is not surprising, they would do that for a buck in those days. It was not made by Winchester and it might fetch $450 on a good day. Have a good one. Well, Maybe next time when you find another shotgun like this, you can come here and just show it all ....... instead of trying to play 20 questions with us. I stick with my $450 estimate. A real Winchester shotgun was made in New Haven Conn. Not spain.

This thread has gotten out of hand, and is past its time to be locked (which I will do immediately following this reply).
First, as stated, it is not a true Winchester. Even though it has the trademarked "Winchester" name on it, as previously stated, it was manufactured by Laurona in Spain. True Winchester fireams were manufactured in New Haven, Conn.
Because the gun was not manufactured in the United States, the Cody Firearms Musuem does not have any records for it.
In regards to the quality of the engraving, it is definitely not high-grade or more than just moderate quality. If you want to see what quality engraving looks like on a real Winchester shotgun, take a look at the Model 21 SxS, or a Model 12 Pigeon grade, or a Model 101 O/U Diamond grade or Pigeon grade.
The Cody Firearms Musuem has factory records for the following Winchester shotgun models; 1887, 1893, 1897, and 1901.0
