Unusual Cartridge

I was at a rifle range today when another shooter showed me a cartridge he claimed he just found in a container designated at the range for disposing of brass cases. It was the most unusual cartridge I or he ever saw. It was a straight wall .50cal brass case with what looked like a 400gr+ Speer Gold Dot Bullet seated in it. The thing that puzzled us both though was that the "Base" of the cartridge was narrowed down to what looked like a .30 cal complete with primer. It had some unusual headstampings on the back (I forgot to write them down) whick seemed to indicate that it was some sort of .50cal. From what I remember the overall length of the complete loaded cartridge was roughly between 2 1/2" & 3". Does anyone have any idea what this cartridge was and what sort of firearm it would be fired in. Again the back of the case is smaller in overall diameter than the rest of the overall case itself.   That was my first guess too. I wanted to hold off replying until you answered. Didn't wanna take up unnecessary space here. I've always thought that caliber was pretty neat. Id love to shoot one of those! There's just something about a 1/2" projectile that puts a smile on my face[:D]

  I've done two Grendels now, and I think that for home defense the .50 Beowulf would pretty much take it hands down. I'm gonna do one someday.

  For me I would put it on a pistol lower with a 10" upper barrel. The basic upper would be the AA upper (stripped not built up...cheaper that way[;)] )
