curios and relics License

Anyone know if I need to obtain a pistol permit in order to have a curios and relics License in upstate New York?

  Yes, if you plan on buying handguns. NY State does not recognize C&R licenses for handguns. They must go through an FFL dealer and be transferred onto your pistol permit.

  BATFE will issue a C&R license to anyone who is qualified; they do not know or care about the requirements of each of the 30,000 state & local governments. It is your responsibility to learn & abide by the laws in your jurisdiction; "upstate New York" is not specific enough.
  
  NYS law does not require you to obtain a pistol permit if you only intend to acquire C&R long guns (rifles & shotguns).

  No, you definitely don't need any other license just to get the C&R license.
  
  You *MAY* need another (eg State issued) license to actually purchase C&R guns in NY or import them into the State, but that's a different question.

  That's true but I wanted it to be clear that a C&R license does not allow you to purchase C&R handgun in NY State. I have had a Colt 2nd Generation SAA sitting at my dealer for a month waiting for me to get it on my permit so I can pick it up. Hurricane Irene put my permit office under six feet of water and all of their equipment and records were destroyed. Fortunately, they have permit info on computers but they're waiting for new equipment so they can process handgun applications.
  
  When I lived in Virginia, the Colt could have been shipped directly to me with my C&R license.
