It was manufactured in July of 1937.

The "A" suffix on the serial number is not the designation for the Model "62A". Instead, it designates a major change to the breech bolt locking system that was implemented on May 12th, 1935.

The early Model 62 rifles used the exact same locking system as the Models 90 & 06, which required moving the slide handle approximately 1/4" rearward before the breech bolt would begin its opening movement. The change that occurred in May of 1935 resulted in the breech bolt beginning its opening sequence the instant the slide handle was moved to the rear (faster cycle time). The early Model 62s without the change have three pins in the top of the breech block, and those with the improvement have just one pin. The serial number range for the change begins in the early 20,000 range.

Winchester manufactured the Model 62 in 22 Short only with the bullet shaped loading port exclusively up to June 20th, 1938. At that time, the triangular shaped loading port was introduced and was used on the Gallery trade rifles only. Those that were sold to the general public still used the bullet shaped loading port. Production of the 22 Short only variant amounted to approximately 3% of the total production.

Without any solid provenance that it was bought and used as a "Gallery" gun, it will be viewed as a standard 22 Short Model 62.
