Winchester model 12 questions

I have two Model 12's, mfg.52 and 63. Both have 30"full choke bbls with V/R and center bl beads. I was told they were trap guns when I bought them but how do I know they are not just field guns with V/R?? I once saw a 12 with the word "trap" near the serial #. They both have custom stocks now and trap shooting is all I have ever used them for but I do not want to misrepresent them if and when I sell them. Answers or referrals would be appreciated. Thanks

    I picked up today at a garage sale a Winchester Model 12 pump shotgun in 12 gauge.It has more abuse the use.Nothing a little Blue Wonder gun cleaner and some 0000 steel wool can't fix. 28 inch barrel in full choke and takes a 2-3/4 shell.Field grade model i believe.Serial number 1025624.Forearm has 18 grooves in it.It will only load 2 shells,so i am assuming it has a plug in the magazine.What is the date of DOM of this and how do i remove the plug from the mag tube ? Gave a $100.00 for it.I think i did ok.None of the screws have been messed with by Bubba.

    The DOM is September 1943. Yes, it has a wooden plug in the magazine tube. It will hold three shells total. Legally, it needs to have the plug in place if you intend to hunt with the gun.

    Bert, I dont understand why you need a plug to be legal unless you mean for waterfowl hunting where your limited to three shells. Can you explain that?

    I forgot to mention it has a small rib on top of the barrel.Thickest in the middle of the rib and tapering to each end.How do i remove the plug ? I have many gunsmith screwdrivers and a can of Kriol and skills.

    Dove hunting also has a 3 shell limit....

    "How do i remove the plug ?".......YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE END OF THE MAGAZINE TUBE, 2 SCREWS AND THE LARGE 'TAKE-DOWN' PIN. START WITH THE PIN, PUSH IT 'OUT' AND YOU CAN SEE A SMALL LENGHTWISE SPRING, PUSH THIS DOWN, IT HAS A SMALL RETAINER AT IT'S END THAT PREVENTS ITS FALLING OUT. THEN REMOVE THE 2 SMALL SCREWS BUT BE CARFUL AS THE MAGAZINE SPRING WILL THEN BE 'FREE' TO LANCH PARTS ACROOS THE ROOM.

    Many states require the 3-shell limit to hunt any game... waterfowl, upland, or even deer.

    It sounds like a Field grade gun, but a picture or two of it will tell the whole story.

    forearm grooves says field grade. $100 is a great buy for any model 12 that works. Congrats. See if its the original Winchester plug inside, you don't see too many of those around any more.

    TRAP55 the link you provided was very helpful.The crosspin was easy to get out as was the 2 small screws thanks to Brownells screwdrivers.The plug is a Winchester plug marked -WINCHESTER MODELS 1901,97 & 12,THREE SHELL PLUG-with a slight taper on each end of the plug.Probably has some value in itself.Put 6 shells in the tube and racked the slide making a total of 7 shells.The gun appears very tight and showing little wear on the moving parts.The surface rust is coming off, but there is some fine pitting in the metal.This gun will be converted to our deep woods protection gun over the winter months.I will cut back the barrel to 20 inches and fit a new sight.I will make spot repairs on the stock, but will leave the fore end alone.I know some of yor are grabbing your chests and falling on the floor right now.I want a short protection gun and don't like any current stuff being offered.I feel the collector valve is low,and I no longer hunt,so I hope I have not offended to many people.Thank's for all the info.
