Stock finishing

I have purchased an unfinished stock for my Ruger 77 M11. What is the best way to finish it? Like what kind of stain? I am thinking of something in either Cherry or Black Walnut. Stock has very nice grain. I would like to have the grain show up nicely.

  i have a H&K o\u and the stock is painted black but i would like to get someone to paint a rebel flag on it. a fellow who shoots trap with me bought a bereta with a american flag and i think it looks sweet.

  Put a hand rubbed oil finish in the wood. Not a plastic finish on the wood!

  Look at Boyd's gunstock site for their finish process video and it's also on you tube (same one) using the tru oil finish process. Get a Birchwood Caseys, gunstock finish kit (about $15) read the instructions and look at the videos on you tube and if you have another old gunstock to play with first is a good thing, but the tru-oil process is pretty much a no brainer.
  I use 1000 to 1200 grit wet dry sandpaper to apply the oil after the sanding seal coat. You will most likely find yourself later wanting to re-finish more stock and even some of your furniture.
  Only drawback I've noticed is the tru-oiled treated wood keeps putting off a mineral spirits odor for several days, so I don't refinish any of my hunting guns stocks within 4 mo's of deer season due to the curing odor.[;)]

  If you want to stain the stock than you must have a blond hardwood stock to work with instead of walnut.
  
  If you use stain, than the smallest scratches have to be sanded out or they will show up as dark lines.
  
  I finish sanding my stocks down to 400 grit, i air blow the dust off and don't dewisker the stock, some people do.
  
  I use a formby's low luster tung oil finish and do light coats each time, hand rubbed in and let dry 24 hours. you can lightly sand the coat with 400-600 sandpaper to smooth the finish, steelwool will leave behind strands so i don't use it. i would go 2 coats before sanding. The 3rd coat will do it.
  
  If I stain, than I use a Minwax dark walnut stain to get that walnut look if it's hardwood.
  
  I prefer the open grain on stocks as they look more natural.
