P-14 converted to 45-70?
Can anyone recommend a gunsmith in the state of florida who can convert a P-14 remington eddystone british 303 to 45-70? I have the 45-70 barrel. I just need a reliable 'smith. Thankyou in advance.

Well, I was going to recomend Bob Cogan, but found out he moved to AL.
How about Bill Jackson in Clearwater [?]

Bill Jackson's does not rebarrel rifles. I have called all over the state to no avail. Still looking for a true gunsmith. Any other recommendations? 0 -

The a-squareco.com builds custom rifles on the p-14 action They may be able to help.
Might cost a bit of $$$0 -
Call and ask about it at "Gator Gun" in West Palm.
Their in the book or,U can sall information and ask for Gator gun,on Military Trail.

I will keep you informed. My understanding is the cost for rebarrel will be between $400.00 and $600.00 with my supply of the rifle and barrel of my choosing. I also understand that almost any 45-70 will cost at least that and more. So I'm considering whether or not it will be worth it in the end, finished product and all, or purchase maufactured 45-70? Any guidance would be appreciated from those who have already been there. Thanks in advance. 0 -

Why not make it worth while and chamber it for a 45/90?0 -
So why would you rebarrel in 45-90? I know that it is a longer casing than 45-70, thus allowing for a hotter powder load. That aside, I also know that 45-70 brass is much more readily available for reloading. It is also possible to"upload" 45-70 to a powder load matching the 458 magnum. I am willing to learn more about 45-90 if it will get me further in my "rebuild". 0 -
The .303 case is 2.21"long, with a loaded cartridge length of 3.09".
45/70 case is 2.105" long, with a loaded cartridge length of 2.73".
45/90 case is 2.40" long, with a loaded cartridge length of 3.03".
The 45/90 would be about the limit to function in the magazine. The 45/70 in that action, will do anything the 45-90 can do and more. Factory loads are pretty anemic, being loaded to Trapdoor pressures. Buffalo Bore ammo or handloads would double the punch, and make good use of that action.
A 45/70 in a 45/90 chamber has a way to jump before it gets to the rifling too, that doesn't help much for accuracy.
45/70 loading components are cheaper and easier to find, and factory ammo can be found on the shelf in most places. I'd stick with the 45/70.0
