Rock Island 1911 17 round??
Anybody know if the Rock Island 1911 with 17 rounds ( I believe that was what was advertised. I know it was so many it surprised me) is any good? I've always wanted a 1911 and getting a high capacity one would be an extra bonus.

IMHO, A double stack .45 requires you to have hands like a basketball centers. If you don't have hands like that, stick to the standard model. 0 -

Rock Island is made in the Philippines. I have been advised by my friend, who is a gunsmith and shoots at Camp Perry, to avoid those 1911s made in the Philippines which are named or imported by Charles Daly, Metro Arms, Armscor, or CAI. 0 -

I own a Para P 14, have small hands and have no trouble with the size. A friend just got back from Camp Perry, where he did very well with his Rock Island. He loves the thing, and says it will out shoot him no problem. His isn't the double stack. 0 -

Its functional, though its probably the lowest end of the double-stack 1911s in terms of quality.
If I were you, I'd make it a point of at least trying a double-stack 1911 before buying one. (Para-Ordnance has some, so does STI).
As mentioned, the grip on these is really fat, sort of like a baseball bat. Some like them. . .some don't, and its not just a function of hand size.
My hands are actually probably slightly larger than average in size, but personally speaking, I don't care for the double-stack 1911 grips. The regular "slim" 1911 feels a *LOT* better in the hand, and IMO a single-stack 1911 with 7+1 (or 8+1) rounds is plenty of ammo for any purpose short of certain action-type pistol competition where high-cap service calibers guns provide an advantage or an actual gunfight.
As a minor separate matter, the double stack mags are also really heavy when loaded and not that cheap.0 -

Its not true.
Springfield Arms 1911 frames and slides are manufactured by Imbel in Itajuba Brazil (not the Philippines) and it says so right on the frame.
Note that these are forged frames, and IMBEL is the national arms company of Brazil that makes all the longarms for the Brazillian military. The company goes back nearly 80 years; its not some new or fly-by-night organization.0 -

This has not been my experience. I have a Rock and know many people who have them. They don't have the shiny finish of other brands, but I, and others, have found them to be accurate, dependable firearms.0 -

When I took CC class, there 6 1911 type pistols in the class. Only two of which made it through the shooting portion w/o malfunction. A Colt and my RI.0
