firing pistol round in rifle

i guess their could be many variances here, inparticular i'm referring to shooting 45 lc in 45/70? is this safe if both are smokeless? do you know of other such same caliber shorter rounds? like a .22 short, long, long rifle comparison.

    Actually there are several dimensions that are different. The base of the 45is 0.480", and the 45-70 is 0.505", the rim thicknesses are 0.010" difference. There is too much room there for head space, and you will most likely end up with a blown case.

    That is a very bad example. The 410 shot gun bore is just that, 0.410 inch diameter. The 45 Colt bullet is 0.452" diameter. Yes, they make guns that will shoot either, but what they are is very long chambered 45 Colts, of which a .410 shell will fit into. By no means should a 45 Colt, or even worse, 44 Magnum, be fired in a .410 shot gun.

    The rounds that can be transposed are usually shorter versions of a longer round that is straight walled, and shoot the same bullet diameter.

    Expanding a bit on the above, there are a number of .32 caliber revolver type rounds that can fit into a revolver (or rifle) chambered for the longest.

    So far as I know there is no commonly available pistol cartridge that will just drop into and fire from a commonly available rifle, with the obvious exception of rifles specifically chambered in pistol calibers (for example lever action guns in .357 magnum that might also accept .38 special, etc).

    Now, its possible to use chamber inserts to convert CERTAIN rifle calibers to CERTAIN pistol calibers. You do get only one shot.

    EDIT: Apparently there is (or was) an adapter available that would let you turn a .45/70 rifle into a single shot .45 ACP. How well it works is a whole other thing. . .I wouldn't expect much in the way of accuracy here, though the large bore volume ought to make the shot a bit quieter than the same round from a pistol.

    .45c in a .45-70 would have such a sloppy fit, that the firing pin strike would be so off-center that it may miss the primer 'sweet spot' completely!

    ..and unless you single-feed, there would be a loading/extraction nightmare (lever rifle, for instance).

    So, and in conclusion:
    Let's keep this discussion at the academic level, and never put it to actual use.

    How about the 44 Mag? lots of revolvers available. For rifles there's the Ruger 44 Carbine, a bolt action Ruger, and numerous makes of lever action rifles. You can also shoot 44 Spl out of the revolvers and bolt and lever action rifles. Don't know if the 44 Spl would work in the carbine.

    There's also revolvers and the M1 Carbine for the 30 Cal carbine round.

    Others have already mentioned the 22 & 38/357.

    Now if you consider single shot pistols, you can add calibers like the 223, 30-30, 35 Rem up to the 45-70 to the list.

    The 32 has a bunch, all pistol rounds. The longest is the 327 Mag,32 H&R Mag,32 S&W, 32 Long and even the 32 APC will fit and it is semi rimless. I shot all of the above while waiting for ammo for the 327 Mag out of the pistol.

    To fire the 45 Long Colt in a 45-70 chamber you'd need a very thin walled steel tube to build up the 45LC case diameter to fit the 45-70 chamber and to center it.
    The 45 Long rim is barely large enough to keep it from falling into the chamber and the extractor mayn't extract a fired case.
    I'd say it can be done but isn't practical.

    The only round I fire out of a pistol and a rifle of the same caliber would be my 41 magnum. The accuracy in both is excellent with the same load. Thats just my 2 cents. I use a hornady xtp-hp 210 grain bullet and 10.3 grains of unique powder with a large pistol primer.

    You bet - as in bore diameter (.452/.454" max for .45LC vs .457" for .45-70.

    There are chamber inserts available for some common calibers & these are mostly considered a novelty item.
