Krag Carbine ?

Do all Krag carbines have a saddle ring?

  Model 1896 and Model 1898 carbines had saddle bars and rings. The Model 1899 carbines did not.

  What Spider said, he is right on the money. I just got through working on a friends 1899 carbine, all the numbers match, everything is corect and it does not have a saddle ring.

  We can check the date of manufacture and compare it to the inspector's cartouche & date. What's the model and serial number?

  Okay got the numbers.
  
  Model # 1898
  
  Serial # 128229
  
  Any info would be cool, I am asking because it has a short bbl and the front sight looks to be made on the bbl. At least these old eyes cant see a seam. The bbl band fits snug, I thought they had wooden hand gaurds on them. This rifle has no hand gaurd.

  Your carbine was manufactured in 1898. It should be dated along with the inspector's cartouche on the left side of the stock.
  
  Carbines did in fact have upper hand guards. See the picture below.
