Barrel Threading Question
I own a Benelli MR1 and would like to attach an AR 15 type muzzle brake to the thing. There are two challenges.
First, the muzzle diameter of the barrel is .55". Second, a ring has to slide over the muzzle device once attached so the OD or the attached device has to be .900" or smaller.
Is .55" diameter wide enough to do the standard 1/2" X 28 TPI threading and if so, does anyone know of a brake with under a .900" outside diameter?
Note: I'm in CA so a brake is OK whereas an FH is not and I don't want to do a "pin & weld" instead of threading.

Major diameter for 1/2-28 is Max .5000" to.4935" which is the min.
You have a .550 barrel which will needs ~.050" turned off before threading 1/2-28 threads. Plenty of room for 1/2" fine thread.

.550 is larger in diameter by at least .050 then the diameter required for the muzzle brake, i.e. your going to have to have a gunsmith or machinist utilize a lath to turn down the end of the barrel before it can be threaded 1/2 X 28.
Contact the customer service folks at Brownells, either by e-mail or by phone. They carry a extensive selection of muzzle brakes for AR's, find out if any are .900 or less in outside diameter.
There is a couple of outfits that use Electro Discharge Machining to create integral muzzle brakes for rifles and handguns. It would probably work out better for you then machining the barrel, and fitting a AR type brake.0 -
Any of the large diameter brakes can be turned to less than .900 with out a problem.. 0 -
Thanks for the responses. I'd considered turning down the OD but the Smith AR 15 brake is .890 OD and is non indexing, I think that will work well. 0 -
Whoever does it should have the brake on hand to get the best fit.
Do insist the thread be lathe cut using a threading tool and not a 1/2-28 die.0 -

I shall - found out the hard way once that not all 1/2" X 28 TPI threading is alike. My habit now is to show up brake in hand.0
