Shipping a handgun for repair

Postal regulation prohibit a non ffl gun dealer from mailing a handgun. A licensed dealer can mail it for you. As I understand it, postal employees are prohibited from asking what is in the package except for some questions about whether it is explosives, etc. Catching comes before hanging but I don't think it wise to ship it in a box in violation of postal regulations. Many post offices have a poster on display showing prohibited items. I suggest you at least look at it before following advice that might get you in trouble.

You must be a FFL dealer to ship a handgun via USPS. You could not tell the PO what's in the box but if you have to make a claim they will deny it and you would face some federal charges. Have your local FFL ship for you.

You will have to use FedEx or UPS.

    End thread.

It is a violation of the US Postal regs to MAIL a handgun if you are not a Dealer or Manufacturer. Anyone that tells you to ignore that is also ignoring that the US Postal Inspection Division has the highest conviction rate of any Federal Law Enforcement agency. And no, the PO does not have a "list of FFLs". Average worker there does not know what a FFL is. Get a dealer to mail it for you, or ship UPS FedEx Next Day Air. And read the sticky on shipping guns.

It will probably end up being cheaper to have a FFL mail it for you than to use FedEx or UPS.

"Is it legal to ship a handgun for repair to a gunsmith"

Prior posts have merit, as they are accurate. But..

try and send it back to the manufacturer. They may issue you a UPS label at no cost.

    Best, Joe
