DPMS 5.56x45
I'm interested in an optics ready DPMS 5.56. I would like to hear good/bad opinions on DPMS. This rifle appears to be the entry level priced gun for DPMS. I have not seen it in person yet and was wondering if it is a carbon gun like the entry level Bushmaster.
How would you rate DPMS in the line up of AR's?

I have the M-4 DPMS. It,s all metal, flat top upper.

I have dealt with hundreds of DPMS rifles. They are very good. They are all metal no carbon. I dealt with a few of the Professionsal Ordnance carbon guns (before Bushmaster bought them) I was not impressed then. 0 -
I have a DPMS lightweight upper on a Bushmaster lower. Nice and light for extended carry from a single point sling, yet (so far) very reliable with everything I've fed it and pretty darn accurate with good ammo, too. IMO their stuff seems to be upper-end of the road as far as mil-spec type fit, finish and parts longevity, but their prices are on the lower end of the spectrum. There are much more expensive ones out there with A+++ looks, accuracy, fit etc.., but you'll pay more for them than a DPMS. I think you'll get a lot of bang for the buck, and you won't be disappointed.
Regarding the lighweight upper: I have no info on the h-bar vs. lightweight barrel rivalry because I have not fired it for an extended time to really heat up the barrel. I do not know if red-hot barrel reliability or accuracy will be affected a little bit or a lot compared to my Colt H-bar 16" or Bushmaster 20" H-bar uppers. (Since I don't really intend to beat these up, I honestly doubt they'll ever get piping hot anyway.)0 -
Thanks. How would you rate the DPMS on a scale of 1-10 in terms of other manufacturers. I will assume Colt would be the 10 0 -
I have shot a few other manufacturers' products, both semi-auto and in military/LE full auto configurations, but I am by no means enough of an expert across the board to rate them all 1-10. I have heard very good things about the S&W M&P, Colt, LMT,Bushmaster, DPMS, Baer, etc.. Since the market is very competetive and the manufacturers are (For the most part) sticking to Mil-spec compatibility, I bet you can't go wrong with just about any one of them. As with every semi-auto, remember magazines are a very important part of their function and reliability, and good ones will almost always not be an issue. Ammo selection is also important, as funky ammo often leads to erratic performance in even the best guns. 0 -
Well, if you're hankerin' fer a mouse gun; why not get one made by Defense Procurement Manufacturing Systems(DPMS)? If Colt is #10 on your scale; you might as well toss DPMS in with 'em. I mean SOMEBODY had to run a few hundred thousand past a military inspector a coupla years ago, and Colt,DPMS, Armalite and others did it very well.
Just too many o-rings and little parts that might fall out into the desert at night for my taste. Fastest way to lock up a AR-style gun is to let the gas carrier key bolts get loose.0 -
With the exception of Hess ... or Blackthorn ... or whatever their current name is just about any AR will serve most people just fine.
Using their charts and comparisons, the S&W, LMT, Daniel Defense are the ones the armchair commandos say are the only ones worth owning ... I remember when those same commandos said if it wasn't Rock River it was crap ... and before that if it wasn't Bushmaster it was crap, and before that it was something else. Heck ... I remember when the Colt was crap because it wasn't a 30 caliber!
A lot of people have forgotten that the Armalite of today isn't the same Armalite that Eugene Stoner worked for when he designed the M-16, they are just the current owners of the name ... and that was the case even 20 years ago when people asked "what AR is best?" It never failed at gun shows you would hear "Stay with A, B, C (Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt) and you will never go wrong ...
These commando's are too influenced by marketing ... there are so many "custom" upgrades now days that its amazing ... and kinda like computers, no matter what you get it will soon be overshadowed by something new.0
