Mauser Ammo
Can you guys tell me what ammo a K98, German Mountain carbine and a Persian mauser take? Are they the same? I've done some homework and I see 7mm Mauser, 792x57 loads but also see 8mm? Are they one on the same? Also, what do you guys recommend for some cheaper Target loads?

8mm Mauser, 8x57, and 7.92x57 are the same. Be aware that there are a few variations, the big important part being .323 bullets vs .318. See 8.57JS
7mm Mauser is the same as 7x57.
If you have *any* question about what your rifle is chambered for (or in hte case of the 8x57 stuff what the bore diameter is) have it checked by a competent smith, perhaps with slugging the barrel and/or having the chamber cast.0 -

The 98k, the G.33/40 mountain carbine, and the Persian 98/29 long rifle, M30, and M49 carbines all take 8mm, aka 7.92X57mm. Same round. 0 -

If it's factory original would be 7.92 X 57 = 8mm Mauser.
Again if it's factory original, they were very high quality, made in Czechoslovakia.
The Czech's set up factory in Persia/Iran to make them. The few of these Iranian made rifles that were imported into the States years ago are safe and functional, but workmanship and finish wise much poorer quality then the Czech made guns.
Be sure the rifle your inquiring about is actually Persian/Iranian not Turkish, many folks tend to mix them up. The Turkish Mausers are much more common then the Persian/Iranian ones.
EDIT #1, Good news, it's a Czech made Model 1930 carbine. This is a very desirable piece to a military rifle collector. Bad news, looks like somebody shellac the whole thing for whatever bizarre reason. I would very very carefully attempt to remove the shellac with out harming the original finish of either the receiver or stock. The condition it's in now would be a major turn-off to a collector, and have a negative affect on value.
Edit #2, Short barrel carbines like the Model 1930 are no fun to shoot, with military type ball ammo. Muzzle blast and flash is uber nasty. I had one of the Dutch police carbines with a similar barrel length years ago. After one trip to the range, I came to the conclusion it was more a collectors gun then a shooter. Might try some U.S. made commercial ammo or even better very light reloads, even with these it's way more a rifle for collectors than something you would want to shoot on a regular basis.0 -

I don't think you will find a lot of choices for 8mm compaired to say a 30-06. For plinking the Lyman 323470 old style Loverin design shoots very well for a 170gr. The new style with undersized front driveing bands doesn't shoot near as well. To get all the 8mm can offer you will need to load for it. The bullets for 8 Rem Mag are way too tough for the mauser. Win/Western brass would be my first choice if you can find any. 0 -

Hmmm. I regularly get medals at camp perry using the so called 8mm Remington mag bullets, esp. the 185 gr Remingtons.
I've found that THE best powder in the 8mm is IMR 4064. For the carbine I'd try some 150 gr Hornadys and a load in the 46 grain range.0
