Lyman 1 A DA
Does any of you know how to identify an older version from a newer ( as in 1950s not current) version of the 1 A sight. I have 5 of them and they are all a bit differnt. I think the earliest ones have Lyman on the up right part and nothing on the base?

The Lyman No. 1A Combination Tang Sight Third Variation has a locking lever on the left-hand side of the upright pivot. According to Nick Stroebel this change constitutes the only design difference from previous No. 1 sights. This allowed the stem to be locked rigidly in the upright or folded position. The patent markings are July 25, 1905 are stamped in the elevation upright. The base is stamped "Lyman" and Middlefield, Conn., U.S.A." along the top flat. These markings are not always present, however. Application codes are stamped into the underside of the base. It was discontinued in 1955.

On the earliest No. 1, First Variation, the patent date Jan 28, 1879 are stamped in the base. It had a thick base and knurled thumb screw. The No. 1, Second Variation, there were some significant changes, such as the base being reduced in thickness, and in place of the knurled thumbscrew there is a large "hairspring," visible to the right of the upright pivot, that allowed the elevation stem to be locked in the upright or folded position by a spring loaded detent. The patent dates Jan. 28, '79 and May 6, '84 are stamped on the elevation upright.

Mine have different knurling on the locking knobs and on of them has Just Lyman on the Base. The others have the full address. They also have different knobs. Some are thinner and have slightly different machining on the knobs. I dont have any of the eariest versions just mentioned. 0
