Weatherby Issues
He guys got a Mk V 300 wby mag, also got some once fired brass, problem is about 1/3 of the shells won't chamber. New RCBS dies, it appears that the neck is wider near the shoulder when compared to some factory rounds I have. The reloads that chamber go in perfect, no tight bolt or anything. Am I doing something wrong when resizing? Reloaded tons of rifles shells, but this is the first weatherby I have ever had. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Did you crimp the slugs? If so you may have pushed the shoulder at the same time and caused it to bulge a little, I've done that on newly annealed brass and it's a PITA. Check the shoulder diameter against the SAAMI specs or the factory loads you have to see if you can measure what your eye tells you is going on. 0 -
No crimp just headed up to measure them. Just got the rifle back from the 'smith he totally disassembled and cleaned. Guy who had it apparently doesn't have any kind of cleaning kit. 0 -
Did you test the brass in the gun immediately after you Full Length re-sized. ((before you installed a primer , powder and bullet.)
If you did not check just the brass, pull a bullet dump the powder, fire the primer and completely re-size the brass and if it chambers hard the brass has been fired in a gun that has some excessive headspace and it's stretched between the head and the belt. A full length belted magnum resizer die does not size this area belt to head area.
If it chambers hard after you insert just a bullet you have distorted the shoulder area when installing the bullet, IF THE PROBLEM IS AT THE SHOULDER AREA on the brass.0 -
Couple of questions here.
What brand of brass? All the same, or mixed headstamp?
How did you adjust your die/shell holder in the press?
What is the overall length of your re-sized cases?0 -
Weatherby brass, all matched headstamp, oal is OK to spec. Set die to touch shell holder then backed off 1/2 turn. 0 -
Did you check the USED resized brass in the gun BEFORE you installed the powder and bullet? 0 -
Did you push the shoulder back during bullet seating? 99% of the time when some will chamber and some will not it is caused by the SLIGHT shoving back of the shoulder.
Did you feel ANY resistance to bullet seating, especially right at the top of the stroke? hold a straight edge along the case to see if the shoulder is bulging out.
Backing off the resizing die 1/2 turn might be a bit too much for your chamber, especially if the older brass is a bit worked hardened and springs back too much after sizing, have you annealed the necks??0 -

I am thinking that RCBS recommends that you raise the press ram with shell holder installed to the top of stroke, then screw the sizer die in until it touches shell holder. Lower the ram and screw sizer in approx 1/4 turn, and set the lock ring. This setting is to full length size the case, which will be necessary if the fired brass was NOT fired in your rifle previously. If the cases were fired through your rifle, you may not need to full length size, and you can back the die off a bit, like just setting it to touch shell holder.
I believe your die/shell holder adjustment is incorrect. Try setting die to touch shell holder and re-size the cases that won't chamber, see if the problem goes away. The way your die is currently set it is only partially re-sizing the case.0 -
Thanks for all the help guys. Gonna try to fix issue this weekend. Gonna try them in the lazermark the guy also had. Then try adjusting the die as you all reccommend. I will post results. Thanks again as always excellent advise!! 0 -

Agreed, except I usually find 1/8th turn is more along the lines of what works. Just get it from not fitting to fitting. 1/4 turn takes a lot of overtravel. No question though it gives desired results if you want to work that hard.0 -

This shoulder distortion happens very easily on the rolled shoulder WBY brass and can sometimes be felt when first starting a bullet into the neck for seating. I make sure the neck is camphered inside, gently start the bullet with the ram, back off and rotate the brass 90 degrees and gently start the bullet again. If the bullet starts little bit sideways the shoulder of the WBY brass will distrot sometimes. Some Wby and Win brass seems to be softer that Fed or Rem and distorts more easily at the shoulder.
(JUST a hint)I've used 7mm Remington Mag brass in 7mm Wby mag's calibers by carefully full length sizing in Wby die, then fire forming in the 7mm Wby Mag gun with excellent results. I dremel grind the Rem Mag headstamp from the brass before resizing, even though the reformed WBY brass WILL not chamber in the 7mm Rem mag chamber after sizing to WBy.
I only do this fire forming brass for myself as a reloader and label the ammo for use ONLY in the serial numbered WBY gun.0 -

Go with the 1/8th turn , along with little or no crimp and you should be good to go .0
