Help me save my Savage M-29A!
I have a Savage M 29-A .22 pump with octagon barrel. It was given to me by my uncle who received it from his uncle. It stopped cycling rounds on the pump. I took it to a local gun smith shop and they told me the parts need to fix it are no longer available. They said they tried the major parts sources on the internet as well as some of their fellow gunsmiths. I'm posting this note in hopes that someone knows a gunsmith out there that specializes in vintage Savage rifles who might help me save my Savage M 29-A for another generation!

If by chance the parts aren't available then I suggest finding a gunsmith who can make the parts for your rifle. Be prepared to pay a respectable price for this service. Custom made parts aren't cheap so decide if your rifle is really worth the investment.

Keep looking on your own if you know exactly what parts you need and if your not in a hurry they will eventually turn up on Gunbroker right now there are about half dozen internal parts listed under Savage 29 also this rifle was known as the Stevens 75 and there parts under that listing as well but check for interchangeability of the specific part 0 -
Another option would be shopping for a donor gun I had to do that for some of my older ones 0 -

I posted this information a few days ago in another topic reply, regarding fixing an older gun with limited or no parts availability.
I am sure there are other expert gunsmiths out there, however these are my favorite for jobs the locals are unable to do.
These people have the maturity (ok, they are older) and the talent and expertise/knowledge/skills that go with that, the contacts, shop capability, etc. to either find parts or make them and to repair your gun to your satisfaction and to professional standards.

Another in agreement w/DON'T GIVE UP. Watch the auctions here for parts/Parts guns. I've had instances where it took 2 years, but the part I needed eventually came up for auction.
Remember also to think "out of the box" in doing your searches. It can be amazing how many different ways different people can describe the SAME THING. Some may not even know what it is.
You need to become very familiar w/the part in question. So that you can ID it by sight.
The Savage 29A is much more common than some I've restored and found parts for. I'm betting it won't take long.0 -
I got in touch with my local gunsmith and he told me the three parts it needs:
-operating plunger
-operating plunger spring
-lifter screw
So now at least I know what I'm looking for.0 -
Please Explain in detail EXACTLY what it was/wasn't doing. Not challenging your gunsmith, but sometimes these things can be simpler than we think. I've purchased a few non working guns that have been pronounced "parts guns" by Gunsmiths. And fixed them very easily.
