    Reagent grade refers to a very high,if not the highest, purity level with the lowest level of contaminants. I'm assuming that the "conductor grades" may have a higher level of impurities.

    The reference I find is to "semi-conductor" grade chemicals which have to be very pure for manufacture of transistor laden chips. Specs on impurities are in the ppt range.

    I would expect such chemicals to cost substantially more than the reagent grade in the wet lab. And no help in a bluing setup.

    Well, I am NOT a chemist, however, virtually ALL grades of commercial chemicals are known as "reagent" chemicals, so that designation can be a bit misleading and confusing.

    Labs generally use the first or second-highest grades of commercial chemicals (reagents) in their testing as I always understood it. Of course we always refered to the lab chemicals as "reagents", with lesser grades having other designations. There was only one grade of chemical that exceeded the purity of the lab reagents we purchased, and right now I don't recall what that grade was called, but "semi-conductor", or "conductor" grade is not it.

    Perhaps you are using the term "conductor grade" to refer to that ultra high grade designation, but if so and in doing so, I think you are using an incorrect "street" designation(?).

    At a basic level, I believe that what I said above is accurate.

    Oh yes.......before we stray to far off the path, "lab" grade ([:)] there we go again, creating a new designation) or "reagent grade" chemicals are MORE than adequate for you to use in rust bluing. Many people use swimming pool acid or vinegar, other impure chmicals, and mixtures of them for that purpose. Naturally, using high grade lab chmicals will allow you, if all other factors remain unchanged, to obtain the highest degree of accurate repeatbility.

    I'm not a chemist by trade, but I used to be a professional lab technician, and I'm certified in clinical chemistry (among other things).

    Yes, any chemical used by a chemist or lab worker could be termed a "reagent", but in referring to chemical purity, by convention the term "reagent grade" refers to the highest level of purity for a given chemical that is commercially available.

    In other words, "reagent grade" is the "good stuff". If you were to look at the package, the truly "good stuff" may be labelled "reagent grade A.C.S" indicating that it specifically meets the standards of the American Chemical society.

    "Technical grade" would be low-end stuff suitable for manufacture where extreme purity isn't necessary. Presumably, this is the stuff you should NOT be using in your rust bluing. . .though whether or not it would actually make a difference is another story. I'm guessing that historically 19th century gunsmiths weren't using "reagent grade" chemicals for rust bluing. [;)]

    "Lab grade" would be cheaper stuff suitable for routine use in a teaching or histology lab, where you need some level of purity and consistency, but not absolute purity.

    I've never used any myself, but I believe "conductor grade" means the material is suitable for use in the manufacture of electronic components (AKA "semi-conductor grade", AKA "electronic grade"). That should be high quality, just not necessarily THE highest quality available.

    And just so I can add my 2 cents, here is a short published list of grades by quality:

    GRADES OF PURITY FOR CHEMICALS

    The following is a partial listing of designations which have been generally adopted to indicate
    different degrees of quality and primary uses of laboratory chemicals. The grades are listed by
    decreasing degrees of purity.

    Reagent. High purity for analytical use. Bottles are often labeled to show lot analysis
    and/or maximum limits of impurities.

    ACS. Meets reagent specifications of the American Chemical Society.

    Chemically Pure (CP). Suitable for routine use. Lot analysis not specified.

    USP. Meets the specifications of the United States Pharmacopeia.

    NF. Meets the specifications of the National Formulary.
    Pharmaceutical Grade. Designates products listed in the USP and NF compendia.

    Practical. Principally organic compounds of medium purity often purified from technical
    grade. Considered suitable for most syntheses.

    Purified. Superior to technical grade, being free from excessive foreign matter. Suitable
    for most purposes except analysis.

    Technical, Commercial, or Industrial. Chemicals of ordinary commercial purity. Not
    refined for laboratory use.
    Most household chemicals are purified grade or better. They can be used in most experiments
    and activities with no adverse effects on results. Always pretest any materials in the
    experiment/demonstration with proper precautions.


    Here is the longer more detailed list:

    Grades of Chemicals
    General

    * Reagent A.C.S. - This designates a high quality chemical for laboratory use. The abbreviation "A.C.S.," means the chemical meets the specifications of the American Chemical Society. A Certificate of Analysis is available upon request.
    * Guaranteed Reagent (GR) - Suitable for use in analytical chemistry, products meet or exceed American Chemical Society (ACS) requirements where applicable. (EMD trademark)
    * AR - The standard Mallinckrodt grade of analytical reagents; suitable for laboratory and general use. If the reagent also meets the requirements of the American Chemical Society Committee on Analytical Reagent, it will be denoted as an AR (ACS) reagent. (MBI trademark)
    * Primary Standard - Analytical reagent of exceptional purity that is specially manufactured for standardizing volumetric solutions and preparing reference standards.
    * Reagent - The highest quality commercially available for this chemical. The American Chemical Society has not officially set any specifications for this material.
    * OR - Organic reagents that are suitable for research applications.(MBI trademark)
    * Purified - Defines chemicals of good quality where there are no official standards. This grade is usually limited to inorganic chemicals.
    * Practical - Defines chemicals of good quality where there are no official standards. Suitable for use in general applications. Practical grade organic chemicals may contain small amounts of isomers of intermediates.
    * Lab Grade - A line of solvents suitable for histology methods and general laboratory applications.
    * USP - Chemicals manufactured under current Good Manufacturing Practices and which meet the requirements of the US Pharmacopeia.
    * USP/GenAR - A line of chemicals manufactured under cGMP, meet the requirements of the 1995 USP 23, meet European Pharmacopeia (PhEur, EP) and British Pharmacopeia (BP) specifications where designated, and are Endotoxin (LAL) tested where appropriate. (MBI trademark)
    * NF - Chemicals that meet the requirements of the National Formulary.
    * FCC - Products that meet the requirements of the Food Chemical Codex.
    * CP (Chemically Pure) - Products of purity suitable for use in general applications.
    * Technical - A grade suitable for general industrial use.

    Acids

    * OmniTrace Grade Acids - Higher purity than Reagent Grade, suitable for trace metals analysis. Acids are analyzed for a minimum of 33 different metals. Trace metals are typically in the ppb range. (EMD trademark)
    * Tracemetal - Acids manufactured to achieve very low metal contamination in ppb range. Primarily used in digestion of samples prior to ICP analysis. Each lot is analyzed for 32 metals by ICP/MS. (Tedia designation)
    * Tracemetal Plus - For critical trace metal analyses, the acids are manufactured by double sub-boiling distillation to achieve low metal contamination in ppt range. Each lot is analzed for 32 metals by ICP/MS. (Tedia designation)
    * Suprapur Grade Acids - High purity grade acid produced by E. Merck. Suitable for sensitive instrumental methods. Trace metals in low ppb range, frequently less than detection limits. This grade applies to acids and salts. (EMD trademark)
    * AR Select - A line of acids specifically developed for trace metal analysis; analyzed for up to 28 metals in the 0.05 to 0.0005 ppm range. (MBI trademark)
    * AR Select Plus - The purest grade of Mallinckrodt acids. AR Select Plus acids are manufactured utilizing sub-boiling point, quartz-lined stills and are packaged in fluoropolymer bottles to maintain purity. These products are tested for 45 elements in the 3.5 to 0.005 ppb range, ensuring low background interference. (MBI trademark)
    * Environmental Grade - Extremely high purity acids refined through a single sub-boiling distillation process. (Anachemia trademark)
    * Environmental Grade Plus - Acids produced by distilling Environmental Grade acids a second time. This product is double sub-boiling distilled acid and is of the highest purity available. (Anachemia trademark)

    High Pressure Liquid Chromotagraphy & Spectrophotometry

    Pesticide & Residue

    * HR-GC OmniSolv Grade Solvents - EMD brand of highest purity solvents available. Tested for suitability for High Resolution Gas Chromatography. Capillary GC impurities at parts per trillion levels by ECD/parts per billion levels by FID. Actual lot analysis on label.     Reagents Volumetric Solutions

    Solutions are prepared with raw materials which meet or exceed requirements of the American Chemical Society. Where no A.C.S. specifications exist, chemicals of highest purity available are used. All aqueous solutions are prepared using high purity, deionized, water which meets requirements for ASTM type 1 Reagent Grade Water. Exacting production and quality control records are maintained providing traceability of raw materials. Lot samples are maintained for a minimum of five years.     Nononsense has definitely done his homework. Some organic solvents are spectroscopy grade, which is better than reagent grade, which also means they are very expensive.
