870 20g question

This may be a dumb question but I know you guys will know the answer.

I have a Remington 870 20g with a smooth bore slug barrel. Can I shoot bird shot out of it or will it ruin the bore?

  Yes you will be fine with shotshells. If it is cylinder bore it will have a big pattern, you will need to check it at the distance you want to shoot and see what its like.

  For a while all the slug barrels(most) were smooth bore with rifled sights. You could use them with rifled slugs and some used them for turkey. Most were cylinder bore or improved cyclinder which is good for slugs. Not so good for a tight pattern on a turkey.

  If it is a newer one, it could concievably be a smooth bore, with a choke tube. If it is, then with the purchase of a couple extra choke tubes, you can make it just about anything you want to.
