WINCHESTER MODEL 63 CHECKERED STOCK
I JUST PICKED UP A EXCELLENT WINCHESTER MODEL 63 WITH A EARLY WEAVER J2.5 SCOPE -- THE FAMILY I GOT THIS FROM SAID THERE FATHER BOUGHT THE GUN NEW IN 1946-47 WITH THE SCOPE - THE FATHER WAS VERY PROUD OF HIS SPECIAL RIFLE AND WHAT HE SAID WAS THE BEST SCOPE ON THE MARKET -- MY QUESTION IS -- IS THIS WINCHESTER CHECKERING ( WHICH WOULD BE RARE FOR A MODEL 63 )- OR DID THE OLD BOY HAVE THE GUN CHECKERED WHEN HE HAD THE SCOPE MOUNTED --- WHAT DO YOU THINK --- THANK YOU -- RICK[img][/img]

The July 1, 1942 Catalog of Component Parts for Winchester Rifles & Shotguns lists for the Model 63 part # 863 "Butt stock
pistol grip complete fancy checked with P. G. rubber cap and screw at a price of $9.30 and part #863A "Butt stock,
pistol grip complete fancy wood, fancy checkered with P. G. rubber cap and screw at at a price of $23.70.
Both items mention the stock having a rubber grip cap that is not pictured on the rifle in question. The catalog does not
have a photo of either butt stock.
Trivia....Please note that item 863 stock is described as "checked" and item 863A is described as "checkered". FWIW0 -
The checkering on your Model 63 is not factory work. It is too coarse, it does not have a border, and it is not one of the standard Winchester checkering patterns. 0 -
Having checkered a few stocks I would say that is a learner's effort. The diamonds are not properly finished, they are not of uniform size and the design not very well laid out. 0
