    It can turn into a very long and complicated answer. You might consider GOOGLEing with the search term being "williams floating chamber" or something similar. "Carbine" Williams was the American who invented and patented the floating chamber. During W W II it was used to actuate the mechanism of the M1 & M2 carbines.

    In it's more readily found application, A "floating chamber" is used in many .22lr conversion kits for the 1911 .45 pistol. Basically, It has a two piece chamber that supports the .22lr casing. Upon firing the casing AND the chamber recoil backward. This adds
    force/inertia to the action to allow movement of the heavy slide of the 1911.

    "Carbine Williams"interesting movie. Dude built a working rifle in prison. Times are much different these days in prison shop. In this situation watch the flick much more entertaining than google.

    Bam bam nailed it when it comes to a Colt 1911 conversion unit to shoot 22 rim fire. the remington model 550 22 rifle that will allow you to shoot 22 short--22long rifle in a semi auto mode. I think the model 572 works the same way.

    While Mr Williams designed both the floating chamber used in Colt Service Model Ace and Conversion Unit .22s and the short stroke gas piston of the M1 .30 carbine, they are not the same thing. The carbine does not have a floating chamber.

    If there are pistol conversion units with floating chambers other than the Colt (and the Argentine copy) I have not seen them.
    The half dozen other brand conversions I have seen all depended on light weight slides either made of aluminum or skeletonized to function in straight blowback.

    While the Remington Model 550 has a floating chamber, I think the 552 is tuned to run on short, long, and long rifle with a lightweight bolt and a thick buffer pad.

    The Remington 550 and 550-1 rifles used a floating chamber to fire shorts and long rifles. It is the length of a 22 short cartridge case. When the round fires, brass expands, grips wall of chamber, chamber recoils. But when the longer (and more powerful) LR cartridge is inserted, it protrudes into the fixed part of the chamber ahead of the floating chamber. When fired, brass expands, the front part of the brass grips the non-moving fixed chamber walls, and the floating part does not recoil.

    The 552 does not have one that I can find- For the Model 550-1 it is part #50 on the Numrich schematic- "Recoiling Chamber". http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=4303

    I think you mean 552 as the 572 is a pump.
