I agree with dcs shooters. I shoot .55" groups all day long with my browning a bolt at 200 yards. I use RL 15. I used IMR 4895 but the gun didn't like it. Not as good grouping.

For a bolt gun yes. Still go with any flavor of 4895 for the gas guns. That's for function not accuracy. Although I get great accuracy using H4895 in my Savage 10FP. My 'standard' load is 42.5 gr. of H4895 behind the 168smk (Nosler CC as well) and 41.5 gr. behind the 175 SMK.

The Varget and Reloader have longer burn times and will give you better velocity. Both are very consistent and have proven accuracy track records.

It's a chore to find a truly bad .308 powder anywhere in the very broad bracket between 3031 and 4320, to be honest. RL-15 is one of my favorites, but I have developed very good loads with 4895, 748, 335, 2520, 4320, 3031 - and others.

Our local SWAT school developed a practice load that almost duplicates the Federal Gold Medal Match load. (which is the ne plus ultra .308 load) The load uses Fed 210M primers, Fed Match brass, 41.0 4064, and the Sierra 168 BTHP Match bullet.

    HODGDON VARGET

Even Hornady states in it's most recent manual that they obtained best results for this bullet using varget powder. I have used it for years and years with perfect results.

Varget, H4895, 8208XBR - I typically use the varget for as many loads as I can, it just works.

I guess no body has tried the IMR 8208 BR powder for the .308.
I all so have a Savage 10 FP and use 168 gr.Serria BTHP and shoot less that a MOA at 300 yards.

For Accuracy myself, prefer Varget and the A-Max combo with a BR-2 primer. JustC and Nonsense turned me on to that little recipe. With the basic ingredients given, it works![:D]

My 28" tube still likes 155gn over 168's!

Want some opinions on the best powders out there for reloading 308 match 168gr.

    Need little more info.
Are you going for precise accuracy?
or are you spraying bullets at 55 gallon barrels, watermellons, 5 gallon water jugs, from the hip, etc.

308's are normally inherently accurate, but every gun has it's likes and dislikes to be really accurate.

it's all a matter of what your rifle likes, mine likes IMR powders at this point. I try all different loads for all my guns and when I find the combination that works best for each gun then that is what I manufacture for them as long as possible to get components.

It was a surprise to me but my 788 shot a half inchgroup at one hundred yds with Benchmark. Haven't shot at a longer range yet but I will soon as the weather clears up.
