Cylinder Scratch-Line
Could someone tell me why the cylinder stop scatches so many cylinders on revolvers ? I know its common and for years I've wondered why it could'nt be elimanated by some simple manufacturing step at the factory prior to hitting the market. Are the stops too tall ? Looks like a good engineer could easily come up with something better. Sorry this turned into a rant, but it just seems totally unnessasary to me. [:(!]

From the factory, expert handfitting would be required to eliminate (on all guns leaving the factory) the cylinder line that is scribed by the bolt on the cylinders of many revolvers.
However, when a revolver is worked over by a gunsmith to manage the timing of the weapon, this line often is the unfortunate result of the timing being set to where the gunsmith intended.0 -
Colt Single Action Armys (Armies?), when properly timed* will keep the cylinder stop (also called bolt) a few .000's off the cylinder until the bolt is directly over the ramp at the cylinder notch. Best, Joe

Regarding the Colt SAA, while I agree with this statement 100%, as I said earlier, there are some situations where a knowledgeable gunsmith will change the timing of the SAA to accomplish and end, resulting in the unavoidable drag line on the cylinder caused by a high bolt.0 -
On double action revolvers, a lot of the drag line comes from operators closing the cylinder without the top chamber being aligned with the bore, and turning the cylinder until the bolt locks the cylinder. That causes the bolt to drag on the cylinder outside the leads (ramps) and eventually makes a mark.
Most Smith & Wesson revolvers are factory-timed so that the bolt drops well before the lead on the cylinder notches. This is Smith's way to insure that the cylinder does not "throw by" in rapid double action shooting. On a properly timed Colt revolver, the bolt will drop after it is above the lead, so there will be no drag line if the cylinder is closed properly.0 -
French Lefacheaux revolvers and Belgian copies used stops rising above the cylinder diameter. That arrangement prevented cylinder scratching.
The hand indexed the cylinder in place against these stops during firing.0 -

It's a matter of priorities. First, revolvers are made to sell. Second etc., reliable, accurate, ergonomic, affordable --- somewhere down the list - to stay perfect and not show signs of use. 0
